Whether we celebrate or not, this time of year can grip us in a powerful cultural complex. Here's what you need to know to break the spell and use that vitality for good.
In my opinion, this Christmas season feels especially tense. For the past few years we have lived in a politically divided, post-pandemic environment that has put a wedge into our relationships with friends and family. Social media has become the group mind for fueling aggression and celebrating violence. How we have become so heartless? Has technology and media taken away our compassion and hope for humanity? Kindness and connection takes courage these days! I know change starts with ourselves, making a small effort every day to have eye contact and meaningful conversations with people around us can make a world of difference. Thank you for asking this question and giving me a chance to think about how I really feel. ❤️
Thank you, Anne! I really share your feelings on this. It's been such a fraught time for the past few years. While I was researching the stats for this post, I came across this year's survey, which noted that 72% of US Americans were hoping to avoid political discussions during the holidays, and 38% are avoiding people they disagree with over the holidays. Yikes! (Full poll is here- https://www.apa.org/pubs/reports/stress-in-america/2024/postelection-survey). I appreciate your comments on connection (and the connection you made by responding to this post!). So many good thoughts your way for the season.
